Microsoft confirmed today that it has cancelled the Fable Legends release and has even hinted at the possibility that the legendary studio behind this title, Lionhead, might be closed in the near future. The company has confirmed that it’s making changes to internal development studios and that Fable Legends is no more.
Fable Legends was first announced back in August 2013 and Lionhead was expected to release an open beta of the title this spring. The game would have been free to play and available on both PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, allowing console owners on both sides of the aisle to compete against each other.
The company has also confirmed today that it’s shutting down Press Play Studios in Denmark aside from sunsetting development on Project Knoxville. Microsoft made these confirmations through an update on the official Xbox website.
Microsoft says that these were tough decisions and that it hasn’t taken them lightly and nor are they a reflection on the development teams working in both studios. It says that these changes are being made as Microsoft Studios continues its focus on investment and development of games and franchises that fans “find more exciting and want to play.”
It’s not providing any more details today except that it has ceased development on Fable Legends and that it’s in discussions with employees over at Lionhead about its “proposed closure of the studio.”
