One of the reasons why many luxury watchmakers charge so much for their watches is because of the materials used. They tend to pick better quality metals, glass/sapphire, and in some cases they might include rare stones like gems and diamonds, gold, or use expensive types of leather and use terms like “handmade” or “handcrafted”.
Interestingly enough Breitling has recently unveiled their latest watch at Baselworld called the Breitling Avenger Hurricane, and instead of being made from those materials mentioned above, it is actually made out of plastic. To be fair, this isn’t some cheap plastic, but rather a proprietary polymer that the company is calling Breitlight.
The idea is that because it is made from plastic, or Breitlight if you’d rather, it will be lighter than traditional materials, not to mention its anti-magnetic properties also means that you won’t have any skin irritations, it won’t corrode, and apparently it will be pretty hard to get scratches on either, meaning that you’ll be able to enjoy a pristine-looking watch for years to come.
That being said, it does not come cheap as it is priced at $8,390. Like we said earlier, materials is one of the reasons why luxury watches are expensive, but there is another factor which is the watch’s movement. In this case it will be come with Breitling’s B12 movement which is usually put together by hand, versus lower-end watches in which they are all produced on some factory’s assembly line. To that end, it does look pretty good and if you’re after something a little more unique, this could be it
