It looks like the folks over at Apple are working on their very own cloud infrastructure with one extremely simple reason – to lower its level of dependence on services such as Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud Platform. In a project that has been given the name “McQueen”, there is a team over at Apple assigned to develop this in-house cloud storage system.
Sources familiar with the situation do not have any idea as to when this particular project will be ready for a mass roll out, however, but a source did mention that the codename is a reference to Apple’s intent, so that the company need not have to rely so much on the aforementioned trio of services. It seems that AWS’s inability to load photos and videos quickly onto iOS devices might have something to do with the situation, and Apple executives are optimistic that a full cloud infrastructure could be profitable within the first three years of operation.
With Apple throwing in more money into data centers worldwide, along with plans for data centers in China and Hong Kong, Ireland, Denmark, Reno, and Arizona, you can be sure that there is plenty of weight to this rumor.
