Apple is going to conduct an event on March 21st where the company is expected to unveil the much rumored 4 inch iPhone. The handset is believed to be called the iPhone SE and it may be powered by the company’s latest A9 processor and provide features like 4K video recording. An analyst predicts that the new smaller iPhone is going to prove to be a hit among Apple upgraders who have still not moved to the larger iPhones that the company has been releasing for the past few years.
There’s a strong case to be made in favor of smartphones with large displays. Most Android OEMs are now shipping flagship handsets with displays north of 5 inches. Apple went the same way a couple of years ago and while the bet paid off, it seems that the company thinks it can still capitalize on its customers that don’t want a larger display.
Amit Daryanani of RBC Capital Markets writes in a note to investors today that only 40 percent of the install base has upgraded to Apple’s iPhones that offer 4.7 or 5.5 inch displays. They’re sticking to their old iPhones that have 4 inch displays and they are likely to upgrade to the iPhone SE since it will bring all of the features one would expect from a modern iPhone without bumping up the screen size.
Not only is the iPhone SE expected to be reasonably priced, but it’s also said to be powered by Apple’s latest A9 processor with features like Apple Pay. It will be a truly modern iPhone and the analyst expects this will appeal to Apple upgraders so much so that the company might end up selling 15 million units of the iPhone SE every year.
