There have been a lot of rumors and reports these days about a new variant of the PlayStation 4 that’s has support for 4K gaming. Multiple reports have suggested that a 4K PlayStation 4 is now in the pipeline and according to a new report, we might see this version of the popular Sony console being announced before the PlayStation VR is due to launch later this year.

Sony has already started taking pre-orders for the PlayStation VR headset, pre-orders are open for the launch bundle and the headset only, with a release slated for October this year.

Wall Street Journal reports that Sony’s updated PlayStation 4 will have support for 4K graphics and it will feature an upgraded processor and GPU. The updated console is also said to provide more power for the PlayStation VR headset. Both versions of the PlayStation 4 are reportedly going to share the same software catalog.

It’s not common for consoles to receive such mid-cycle upgrades but things appear to be changing. Microsoft hasn’t closed the door on this possibility for the Xbox One as well and while Sony is yet to confirm anything, the reports make it seem that the 4K PlayStation 4 is without a doubt coming later this year.

The report doesn’t say precisely when the 4K PlayStation 4 will be released and how much it will cost, it only says that the console might be announced before the October 2016 launch of the PlayStation VR.
