If you’ve ever used a smart TV or a set-top box chances are you’re not quite happy with the way text entry goes. It can be a pain in the sitter to input text on most of these devices and often they leave you wishing for voice dictation. The new Apple TV didn’t have this feature when it first came out last year, making text input just as painful, but Apple is finally making things right.
It has seeded the latest tvOS beta to developers and the new firmware brings one of the most wanted features for the set-top box: voice dictation.
Apple TV users can now dictate what they want to search for in the quick search box. Once the feature is enabled all they need to do is speak into the Siri remote to have text entered in any field that they can type in.
Voice dictation also supports spelling usernames and passwords so logging into your iTunes account will be easier. The new update will also enable you to search the App Store from anywhere in the Apple TV by holding the Siri button and giving commands like “Search the App Store for VLC.”
This feature is only included in tvOS 9.2 beta 3 right now, Apple is expected to release the new update for everybody this spring, it’s likely that it might give us a release date at its rumored event on March 15th.
