By now many of you guys should have heard about Uber by now, or maybe for some of you, even used the service. For those unfamiliar, Uber is basically a service that allows users to call for cars to pick them up and send them to their location. Essentially it is a car service, but over in Bangkok, Thailand, Uber is trying something different.
The company has recently launched a motorcycle service in Bangkok, Thailand called UberMOTO. The concept is identical to regular Uber, except that in this case users will be hailing for bikes instead of cars. For those who have never been to Bangkok, if there is one thing the city is famous for it would be its massive traffic jams which comes to standstills more often than not.
However since motorbikes tend to be smaller and more nimble, those in a hurry will be able to hop on one and weave in and out of cars and reach their destination quicker. In terms of pricing, the base rate will start at ฿10 ($0.28), plus ฿3.5 a kilometer ($0.10) and ฿0.85 a minute ($0.02). We’re not sure if there are plans to launch in other markets, but given that motorbikes are extremely common and popular in Bangkok, it makes perfect sense.
However we have to wonder if this could end up stepping on some toes in the process. Uber is already extremely unpopular amongst taxi drivers, and in Bangkok there already exists motorbike taxis, so we have to wonder if they’ll have anything to say about UberMOTO.
