As we speak, the debate about whether Apple should give in to the FBI’s requests and unlock the iPhone or provide a backdoor rages on. Whether or not that actually happens remains to be seen, but in the meantime it looks like Americans seem to be on the side that Apple should unlock the phone for the FBI.
This is according to a recent poll conducted by the Pew Public Research Center which found that more than half of those they surveyed opposed Apple’s position in its privacy battle. Only 38% of those polled said that Apple should not unlock the iPhone in the interest of ensuring that their devices remain secure.
It also doesn’t seem to be political either because according to Pew’s findings, the number of Democrats and Republicans who support the FBI’s position were roughly the same at 55% and 56% respectively. Interestingly enough Pew’s findings are very different from Cult of Mac who held their own survey.
Out of the 1,658 votes that took place, an overwhelming 73% said that Apple shouldn’t unlock the iPhone in question. The reason behind Apple’s stance is because they are worried it will set a precedent, something that the FBI’s director assures will not. There are also others who believe that by creating a backdoor for the good guys means that there is also a backdoor for the bad guys just waiting to be discovered, but what do you guys think?
