Spotify has announced that it’s going to move much of its data from its own servers to Google’s Cloud Platform. This move won’t change the fact that Spotify’s music files will continue to be hosted on a storage service being provided by Amazon. The music streaming service is moving its core infrastructure to Google’s platform because Google’s data analytics capabilities are far superior to its own.
“That’s where Google has the edge and that’s where we think they will continue to have the edge,” said Nicholas Harteau, who is the vice president of engineering and infrastructure at Spotify.
On the face of it this seems like any other business deal with Spotify deciding that Google’s platform offers better capabilities and deciding to move to it. It’s a win for Google as well which signs one of the most popular music streaming service on the planet.
The rumor mill is having a field day with this, though. There has already been speculation in the past the Google might end up acquiring Spotify, so this latest move is just adding fuel to the fire.
Rumor has it that Google will eventually acquire Spotify to increase its position in the music streaming market, given that Apple is already making progress with Apple Music, so having Spotify under its belt would boost Google’s position in this market.
This is pure speculation right now. Spotify hasn’t even hinted if it’s looking to sell and there’s no confirmation as yet from Google about its intentions to acquire the music streaming service.
