Most new cars now have built-in 4G LTE hotspots allowing passengers to keep connected on the move but what if you have an old car and would like to have the same feature? There are multiple aftermarket options available and now Samsung has come out with one as well. It’s called Samsung Connect Auto, the dongle plugs into the OBD-II port of your car and not only does it run diagnostics, it also turns your car into a 4G LTE hotspot.
If your car was manufactured in the ’90s then it most certainly has an OBD-II under the steering wheel. Just plug the Samsung Connect Auto dongle in the port to get diagnostics information from your vehicle and also power the 4G LTE hotspot.
Information from the diagnostics port can be used to help drivers increase fuel efficiency, their driving behavior and adopt safer driving habits. All of the data is secured using Samsung Knox.
The dongle runs Tizen so it’s not limited to just a few features and services. Developers can take advantage of the software development kit to create new services and features for the dongle. Samsung will create an ecosystem by partnering with insurance companies, carriers and roadside assistance operators to bridge the gap between the mobile industry and auto manufacturers.
4G LTE service will be provided by AT&T, it’s going to be the first carrier in the United States to offer this service. Samsung Connect Auto will be available later this year in the United States.
