The Pentax K-1 has been rumored about and leaked for a while now, so it is good to finally see it officially announced. In fact just last year, Ricoh showed off a full-frame prototype, so it looks like the prototype has become a reality. The only downside is that there will only be two fully compatible lenses available for the camera at the moment.
This includes the HD Pentax-D FA 15-30mm f/2.8 and the HD Pentax-D FA 28-105mm f/3.5-5.6 zoom. Note that there are other older Pentax full-frame lenses that you can use, it’s just that they won’t have autofocus or image stabilization. You can opt to use medium-format lenses by Pentax, but since this is a full-frame sensor, it will result in photos with a 1.6 times magnification.
As far as the camera’s specs are concerned, the Pentax K-1 will sport a magnesium body that is weather-resistant and dustproof. It will also feature a 36.4MP sensor, a top ISO of 204,800, and 4.4fps shooting speed. The camera will also feature a unique display that can be pulled out and twisted at odd angles.
The best part of the K-1 is its price. It is set at $1,799 for the body-only, and considering that there are other full-frame DSLRs that cost way more, this might be a good starting point for photographers who need an affordable full-frame camera. The Pentax K-1 is expected to be available for purchase this coming April.
