It has only been a month or so since Netflix announced that it was expanding to 130 additional countries. The online video streaming service is truly global now and it has no plans of slowing down anytime soon. Since there aren’t a lot of countries remaining that it can expand to, Netflix is now going to focus on further improving its service and go all in on HDR.
“We started exploring HDR content about one year ago,” said Chris Jaffe, he’s the vice president of user interface innovation at Netflix while pointing out that HDR is the obvious next-level resolution in playback experience.
Netflix is going to provide more content over the coming months that subscribers can stream in HDR, content like the company’s original shows which include Marco Polo and the upcoming season of Daredevil.
The amount of bandwidth required remains a concern for Netflix but Jaffe says that the company has created new compression algorithms that adjust the quality of the video based on its complexity while delivering it in high resolution.
Netflix isn’t taking its eye off the UHD ball as well, particularly as UHD and HDR technologies become popular with high-end TVs. It’s expected to add more than 600 hours of 4K Ultra HD progamming to its library this year.
