LINE Shuts Down MixRadio Streaming Service

Back in 2014, messaging app LINE bought MixRadio from Microsoft. For those unfamiliar, MixRadio was probably one of the earlier music streaming services from back in the day and was originally launched by Nokia, at least until Microsoft acquired the company in which MixRadio was part of the deal.

However it looks like LINE has no more use for MixRadio either and has announced that they will be shutting the service down. According to a statement put out by the company, “After a careful assessment of the subsidiary’s overall performance, the financial challenges posed by the music streaming market, and priorities of LINE Corporation, LINE has determined that future growth would be difficult to ensure and decided to discontinue the MixRadio music streaming service.”

We suppose in a way it makes sense for the company to shut it down. Also back in 2014, LINE announced that they were launching LINE Music, another music streaming service, so obviously it doesn’t make sense to have two services at the same time. In fact this is probably why Apple has decided to merge iTunes Radio into Apple Music as opposed to keep two separate services.

No word on when MixRadio will officially come to an end, but the company did state that they will be winding things down in the next couple of weeks.
