LG has teamed up with Google multiple times in the past to create Nexus devices but the company is taking a year off from this partnership. A spokesman for the company has confirmed that LG currently has no plans for a successor to the Nexus 5 and Nexus 5X. This means that there potentially won’t be a new Nexus smartphone made by LG in 2016.

“LG needs to focus on its own brand,” the spokesperson said, which rings true as the company gears up to fight against Samsung in the high-end segment of the market.

Both LG and Samsung unveiled their latest flagship handsets on the very same day last week and they will release the new devices within a few weeks. Only then we will find out whether LG’s flagship rakes in more customers or Samsung’s.

It’s not surprising to see LG back away from another Nexus smartphone as it pours time and resources for pushing the LG G5 as the smartphone to have this year. The company will certainly be positioning its new flagship as a worthy alternative to the Galaxy S7.

The spokesperson does point out that LG is happy with the relationship that it has with Google, while pointing out that working on Nexus phones takes a lot of time and resources, all of which are currently focused on the G5.
