Cases of suicide bombings seem to have increased over the past few years. Unfortunately unless you are aware that a suicide bombing could take place, it would be hard to spot a suicide vest, especially if worn under layers of clothing. However thanks to the efforts of a company called R3 Technologies, we might finally have a device that can detect suicide bomb vests.
The idea of a device that can detect suicide bomb vests isn’t new. Many companies have tried in the past to create such devices, but apparently none have been particularly effective. In fact over on the UK, the government has actually banned those that were found to be completely ineffective, so safe to say that R3 Technologies’ creation might just be what we’ve all been waiting for.
The company claims that their device, the CBD-1000, is able to detect suicide bombs that might not necessarily be metallic in nature. This means that if a bomb has been loaded up with rocks or glass, it will still be able to pick it up. The device detects these materials through a continuous wave radar, but unfortunately for now, the device is a bit slow.
It will take 1.3 seconds to scan a stationary target, and for now seems to work best at short ranges. This means that your subject could be alerted to your presence, which in turn might prompt them to set the bomb off. However the company does have plans to improve upon its tech to make the scans more or less instant, and detectable from as far as 100 feet.
R3 Technologies has plans to sell the CBD-1000 later this year for $50,000. Whether or not it will be effective in the real world and real-life security scenarios remains to be seen, but for now it does sound like a pretty promising idea.
