There are superhero movies and superhero movies, but Deadpool isn’t one of them. If you have ever read the comics you’ll be well aware that Deadpool doesn’t consider himself to be a superhero. Nevertheless, that hasn’t stopped the movie from setting a box office record, it has brought in the best opening weekend ever for an R-rated film. In case you’re not aware of how the MPAA’s rating systems works, the R rating limits admission to people 17 or older without an adult.
Deadpool is estimated to have raked in a staggering $135 million during its first weekend in the United States. This is the best opening so far for an R-rated film. The figures don’t include international sales.
The Matrix Reloaded, released back in 2003, previously held this record. It earned $91.7 million during the opening weekend. Top five R-rated films include American Sniper, The Hangover Part II and Fifty Shades of Grey. All of the movies earned up to $90 million on the first weekends.
Deadpool is different from other superhero movies not only because of the entire storyline but because most of them are rated PG-13 so as to maximize sales at the box office. If you’re planning to see this movie it would be best to leave the kids at home if you don’t want them to pick up some not-so-nice-words ahead of their time.
