Speaking to MCV UK, Capcom’s brand manager Brian Ayers said, “We want Street Fighter V to last a console generation. That’s a very brave move from the business side of things. But that is how we are looking at the product as well. It’s not: ‘right, get it out, it’s the first six months and then it’s done’. We’re talking lifetime on this now in years rather than quarters, which I think is quite telling in itself.”
So how long is a console generation? Usually it is set for about 10 years. For example the PlayStation 3 was released in 2006, and its successor the PlayStation 4 was released in 2013, with the PS3 officially being discontinued in 2015. This means that as far as the PS4’s lifespan is concerned, there should be about 6-7 years left, meaning that Capcom could spend that long supporting Street Fighter V.
That being said, Street Fighter titles have been played competitively over the years, so it wouldn’t be a stretch to think Capcom would keep supporting it as long as it remained competitive, like how Blizzard has maintained games like Diablo 2 and StarCraft for many years, even after their successors have been released.
