Rumors of Apple creating an iPhone with a dual camera setup surfaced last year, but it was a rather radical rumor that we did not pay too much attention to, at least until Apple acquired LinX in which the rumors started to make their rounds again. However it was just last month that it suddenly became more “final” with the rumors suggesting that the design could make its way to the iPhone 7.
Now according to a report from DigiTimes (via MacRumors), it has been suggested that Apple is already testing various dual camera samples sent in from a variety of camera lens makers from Taiwan, Japan, and China. One of those suppliers is Taiwanese company Largan Technology, who apparently supplies over 60% of Apple’s smartphone cameras.
This has led to speculation that Apple could be thinking of mixing up suppliers so as not to be too dependent on a single company. For those hearing about the rumors for the first time, the earlier reports claimed that a dual camera setup would be arriving for the next-gen iPhone. However it would only be for the iPhone 7 Plus, and even then not all models would get it.
This seemed to indicate that maybe Apple could create a special higher-end model aimed at more serious photographers who would be willing to pay for the technology and features. In any case take it with a grain of salt for now, but since an iPhone announcement is probably still some time to go, we guess we’ll have to wait and see if it pans out.
