Now it looks like VirnetX is back and it looks like they might have gotten yet another win over Apple, and this time the payout is much, much higher. According to the court’s ruling, Apple was ordered to pay VirnetX a whopping $625 million in damages for infringing upon a patent the company owns that is related to FaceTime and iMessage’s security.
In fact not only is this amount almost double that of VirnetX’s previous win, but it was also more than the $532 million that the company was initially seeking. In a statement made to Engadget, VirnetX’s attorney Jason Cassaday said, “The jury saw what we have been saying all along: Apple has been infringing VirnetX’s patented technology for years.”
Unsurprisingly Apple has stated that they are planning on appealing the decision, and also said that they were surprised and disappointed by the decision. Will Apple be successful in their appeal? We guess we’ll have to wait and see.
