VLC is without a doubt one of the most popular media players out there, it’s available for a wide variety of platforms, and not too long ago it made its way to the new Apple TV that’s capable of running apps. A new version of the app has been released which brings the ability to cast content to the Apple TV directly from a browser using VLC for Apple TV’s “Remote Playback” feature.
VLC for Apple TV enables users to get access to all of their files and video streams in native formats on the set-top box without having to convert the media first. VideoLAN promises that users will get all of the features and format support that they are used to in VLC, as well as a few features specific to the Apple TV.
The casting or Remote Playback feature is an interesting one, and it’s not exactly as easy as tapping on a button to beam content to the set-top box. Instead, you first have to open a page in the web browser and then drag content you want to cast on the Apple TV in the page. The app also allows you to paste URL for direct streams and control playback from a web interface.
The app is also integrated with OpenSubtitles.org which will enable you to download missing subtitles during playback, subtitles can include left-to-ridge languages such as Arabic. The Apple TV app can also be used for music and internet radio that’s backed up by album art and lyrics pulled in through integration with hatchet.is.
Like all VLC apps, the Apple TV app is available as a free download as well. Some new features that will be added to the app in the future include integration with cloud storage services like OneDrive, Dropbox and Box.
