Verizon has made it clear that its customers shouldn’t keep their fingers crossed for unlimited data to return. The company’s CFO Fran Shammo confirmed in an interview following its fourth-quarter earnings report that for now Verizon has no plans of launching any unlimited data offering for its customers. Big Red is taking this position despite the fact that its rival AT&T, the second largest carrier in the country, brought back unlimited data albeit with a catch.
AT&T has brought back unlimited data for customers with a catch, they have to also subscribe to its U-Verse or DirecTV services if they want to get unlimited data on their mobile devices.
It was back in 2010 when both Verizon and AT&T stopped offering unlimited data option to their customers, most major carriers have got rid of those plans entirely, and they have also resorted to raising prices for customers that are on grandfathered plans.
It merits mentioning here that AT&T hasn’t permanently brought back its unlimited data offering, it has said that this is a limited time promotion, but hasn’t specificed when it will end. AT&T is just using the premise of unlimited data to boost subscriptions for its TV services.
Shammo remarked in the interview that “promotions come and go,” and that Verizon can’t possibly react to every single one, which is why it’s going to stick with no unlimited data offerings for now. Obviously that doesn’t mean there’s no chance of it ever returning in the future but for now, Verizon customers can stop dreaming about unlimited data.
