It’s not uncommon to hop in an Uber with the expectation of a nice and smooth ride only to find out that your driver appears to be in a hurry and is, therefore, speeding more than you’d like. One can complain about this once the ride is over and they’re asked to rate their experience. To ensure that the drivers are able to have their say in these matters as well Uber has now announced that it’s running a pilot program to collection information about a driver’s rides using their smartphone.

“Technology can help get to the truth,” writes Uber in a post on its blog, saying that this will allow it to know if the driver is checking their phone too much during the ride or if they’ve been speeding too much.

Since it inquires about low ratings, whether it’s an unruly passenger or a driver that’s speeding too much, Uber does need to check every time something like this happens and it believes this will facilitate better conversation with both sides regarding the matter to get to the truth.

Uber is collecting information from various sensors in drivers’ smartphones, such as accelerometers, gyrometers and GPS to ascertain how often the vehicle starts or stops, its overall speed. All of this information will enable the company to verify feedback by reviewing all of the data associated with that trip.
