Steam’s platform has several purposes. It acts as a storefront where gamers can purchase games, and through it developers and publishers can ensure that the games bought are legit and original copies. However apart from a storefront, Steam also acts as an online platform where gamers can play games together.
That being said, it seems that Steam is slowly becoming the defacto platform for PC gaming, thanks to its most recent numbers which revealed that on the 3rd of January, Steam played host to a whopping 12.3 million users at the same time! Prior to this, Steam’s highest concurrent users was 10.7 million back in October.
So like we said, it seems that more users are getting on Steam, which in turn will slowly make Steam the default platform for PC gaming, kind of like how many would associate Apple’s iTunes as being the more prominent digital store for music. According to GameSpot, they speculate that the uptick has to do with the Christmas and New Year where there were long weekends, which in turn afforded many users more time to play.
Also revealed in the numbers were the top 5 most popular games on Steam, which includes DotA 2, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Fallout 4, Grand Theft Auto V, and Football Manager 2016.
