Star Wars: The Force Awakens has proven to be a hit, ever since it was released it has been breaking records set by some of the biggest releases of the past few years. That was to be expected since this is the first movie in this popular franchise for nearly a decade and fans were obviously out in full force. Perhaps some of them might not be pleased to find out that when this movie does come out on DVD it’s not going to feature an extended or “director’s cut.”
The movie premiered on December 18th and took less than a month to become the highest grossing film in the movie history of North America. It has already raked in close to $800 million and it’s still playing at theaters across the globe.
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly J.J. Abrams, who was in the director’s chair for this movie, confirmed that while the DVD set is going to feature deleted scenes there will be no extended or so-called director’s cut.
Movie buffs will know that Abrams doesn’t particularly like director’s cuts. Even though the first cut of Star Wars: The Force Awakens is about 170 minutes and the theatrical runtime is 136 minutes, about half-an-hour of unused footage exists yet it won’t be presented in context with the film when it comes out on DVD.
Fans may not like but that’s the way it’s going to be.
