[CES 2016] A mobile payments service is really as good as how availability it is. After all if only a select few retailers support it, what’s the point, right? That being said, Samsung Pay has been off to a good start and has been gaining a fair bit of momentum, and it looks like that momentum will be growing.
During CES 2016, the company announced that they will be bringing Samsung Pay to new markets which includes Australia, Brazil, and Singapore. This increases the number of markets Samsung Pay is available in, which right now comprises of South Korea, the US, the UK, Spain, and just last year Samsung announced plans to enter China.
Together with the three new countries, the total number of countries the payment service will be available brings it up to eight. One of the reasons why Samsung Pay has been gaining traction is largely thanks to its use of MST technology. This allows Samsung Pay to work with older terminals that might not have NFC.
This is versus other payment services such as Apple Pay that is limited to NFC systems. However just like Apple Pay, Samsung Pay is limited to just its own brand of products, but last we heard Samsung could be opening up the service to non-Samsung devices, but until then it seems that you will need to have Samsung’s latest phones in order to use its service.
