This is versus the Nikon D500 which allowed for 30 minutes at one go. We know it’s weird that Nikon’s flagship can’t do the same, but that could soon change. According to a report from Nikon Rumors, they have heard from a Nikon rep that a firmware could be released in the near future to correct that.
The rep claims that a firmware update will be released after the camera has begun shipping in March, in which the update will allow the camera to shoot 4K video for up to 30 minutes at a time. We’re not sure why Nikon did not include that feature at the start, but it is possible that maybe they changed their minds after getting feedback during the camera’s launch.
Either way Nikon has not officially confirmed it (sometimes reps do get it get) so take it with a grain of salt for now, but if you are eyeing the Nikon D5 and were disappointed by its video feature, hopefully we’ll find out if the firmware update rumors are true in the coming months.
