When someone steals your phone, the first thing they’ll do is wipe your data. This is ensure that whatever security measures you had, like Find My iPhone, will be reset so that it is treated like a brand new device, meaning that you won’t be able to trace it. However over the years, companies like Apple and Google have introduced new protections like Activation Lock and Factory Reset Protection.
That’s well and good only if implemented correctly, which unfortunately is something that LG did not do. As you can see in the video above put out by RootJunky, it shows him bypassing LG’s Factory Reset Protection in minutes, essentially rendering the security feature useless meaning that a stolen LG Android phone can be reset and sold without any issue.
The process is a little complex as described by Android Police, but basically it seems that if you know what you are doing, and if you have the time, then you should be able to bypass Factory Reset Protection in a few steps. It is unclear as to if this affects all LG phones, but it has been tested on devices like the LG G4 and the recently announced LG V10, meaning that this is an issue that LG has yet to address, but hopefully they will come around to it ASAP.
