Retailers appear to have placed a lot of trust in the selling potential of the current title in the Metal Gear Solid franchise. Latest financial data from Konami reveals that it shipped over six million copies of Metal Gear Solid 5 to retailers. The distinction between shipments and sales is an important one but nevertheless this goes to show that retailers were not shy about stocking this particular title.
Just because Konami shipped over 6 million copies of Metal Gear Solid 5 it doesn’t necessarily mean that it sold as many copies. For all we know a couple of hundred thousand copies might still be sitting on retailers’ shelves.
Konami recently reported its financial results and mentioned that by December 31, 2015 it had shipped over 6 million copies of Metal Gear Solid 5 worldwide. It includes both physical and digital formats in these figures.
It actually chalked them up as sell-in which basically means that it’s counting them as units sold to retailers. Once again, that doesn’t necessarily mean as many end customers purchased Metal Gear Solid 5.
Nevertheless there’s no doubt in the fact that Metal Gear Solid 5 has performed very well in the market, helping push Konami’s digital profits up by as much as 150 percent. Konami did point out in its earnings report that good performance of Metal Gear Solid 5 has resulted in an increase in revenue as well as operating profit.
