Roku has spent the past few years expanding the reach of its platform by selling more of its streaming devices as well as licensing Roku TV, a smart TV platform unveiled in 2014 to TV OEMs, enabling them to build cost effective smart TVs. It’s taking a big step this year by coming out with its first 4K UHD TV, the company has introduced the Roku TV HDR reference design at CES 2016, and hopes to have the product ready later this year. It’s TV OEM partners are expected to introduce around 60 Roku TV models in 2016.
Roku expects to have its first 4K UHD TV ready by spring, the TV will provide the full Roku TV experience with the detail and clarity that 4K resolution brings.
Those who have used the Roku platform before will be at home as all of the features will be available on the 4K TV, to manufacture its first 4K UHD TV Roku has partnered with Chinese firm TCL, and it’s going to release multiple models later this year. Roku will also work with other partners on 4K UHD TVs that will be available a little later in 2016.
Roku TV now becomes one of three ways that the company distributes its smart TV platform, the other two include its streaming media players and the Roku OS that powers smart TVs from other manufacturers.
Pricing for the 4K UHD TCL Roku TV has not yet been confirmed, the TV will be on display at the Consumer Electronics Show 2016 in Las Vegas this week.
