Very few computer manufacturers are associated with high-quality displays. Dell has been among them ever since it came out with excellent 30” LCD monitors in 2006 (I still use the same one!). 10 Years later, the company announces a new 30-inch display with an OLED panel which sets the color saturation and contrast ratio to new heights.
The new UltraSharp UP3017Q looks unbelievable when you see it in person. Upon entering the demo room, it was obvious that it was an OLED display. The image quality and incredible contrast ratio (400,000 to 1) is something that you are used to on a 5.5” smartphone, but it’s a whole new experience when we are talking about a 30-inch computer monitor.
We’ve been looking at OLED televisions for some years, including 4K ones, but seeing sharp 4K (3840×2160) images packed in what is about 25% of the surface area of a 60” television looks very different.
The Dell UltraSharp UP3017Q can reproduce 1.07 billion colors (with the proper graphics card) in just about 100% of the AdobeRGB (or 97.8% DCI-P3) color space and can react to a color change in 0.1ms (response time). Its industrial design features very thin bezel, which makes it a prime candidate for a multi-screen setup (drool now).
It is possible to convey both power and data with a single USB-C cable to have a convenient and clean desk. In the back, there’s what looks like a standard VESA mount, in case you need to attach it to an existing monitor arm. The UltraSharp UP3017Q is incredible, and the retail price of $4999 makes it one of the most expensive 30-inch monitor, but one that I predict will be justified by many enthusiasts and professionals out there.
