Latest data from Juniper Research suggests that the Apple Watch accounted for over 50 percent of all smartwatches shipped in 2015. The report also notes that aside from Apple’s first smartwatch it’s the relatively affordable wearable devices from several other manufacturers that did well in the previous year, however, it finds the Apple Watch to be the clear winner in terms of overall shipments throughout the year.
The report from Juniper Research mentions that response for Samsung’s Gear S2 smartwatch wasn’t at par with the Apple Watch, but one must keep in mind that it was released in the fall whereas the Apple Watch had been around since the summer.
Multiple Android Wear smartwatches were available throughout the year but the report finds that they made up for less than 10 percent of smartwatch shipments in 2015, despite the fact that there are multiple OEMs that have Android Wear powered smartwatches out in the market.
This report is only considering units shipped to retailers and not actually sold to end consumers so it’s not actually saying that 50 percent of all smartwatches sold last year happened to be from Apple, but if its figures are anything to go by, then the company’s first wearable device certainly did well for itself in its debut year.
Things are likely going to get more competitive this year with Apple expected to unveil the second-generation Apple Watch by the summer, and with multiple OEMs lining up their Android Wear smartwatches, it’s certainly not going to be an easy run to the top for Apple’s smartwatch.
