According to the report, the team is said to consist of hundreds of staff from a variety of different companies that Apple has acquired in the past, as well as some that they have poached from other companies, like Microsoft and Lytro, with the former being an engineer that used to work on Microsoft’s HoloLens project.
The Cupertino company is also said to have been building prototypes of possible headset configurations over the past few months, but like we said, whether or not those efforts will result in an actual product is anyone’s guess. Recently the Financial Times had also confirmed that Apple had hired a leading expert in virtual and augmented reality, so it definitely sounds like Apple’s VR team is shaping up rather nicely.
Apple’s CEO was also recently asked about his thoughts on virtual reality, in which Tim Cook replied by saying that he thought it was “really cool”. Whether Cook’s interest is merely passing or a hint at what’s to come is unclear, but with other companies like Samsung, Google, Facebook, Sony, and HTC/Valve getting into virtual reality, it wouldn’t be surprising if Apple were to explore the idea themselves.
