What do you do when you have a great idea and you want to make sure that you don’t forget about it? In the old days, you’d probably scribble on a piece of paper but it’s much easier now, launch the note-taking app on your phone and punch it in. What if you have a musical idea, one that you’d actually like to record? You can’t use pen and paper for recording but you can certainly use a new app that Apple has released today called Music Memos.

This app isn’t really that different from Voice Memos when you come to think about it. You can save a memo in your voice if you don’t want to write it down. That’s basically what Music Memos allows users to do, it lets them quickly capture, develop and organize their musical ideas right on the iPhone.

“Music Memos is like if those two apps came together to form some kind of superpower for songs,” says famous singer-songwriter and producer Ryan Adams who has been quoted in Apple’s press release, “it quite literally blew my mind how Music Memos could transform a single guitar idea into a whole composition,” he added.

With Music Memos it’s possible to record with any musical instrument with the iPhone’s built-in microphone, memos saved in high-quality uncompressed format and can be organized by name and tags. Music Memos is capable of analyzing chords and rhythm of acoustic guitar and piano recordings, it can instantly add drums and a bass line to instantly provide a customizable backing band that plays along to match the feel of the song. It can also provide basic notation which shows which chords were played.

The app is synced with iCloud so memos are instantly available across all of the user’s Apple devices, they can also be shared over email, or ported into more powerful apps like GarageBand for further development.

Music Memos is available as a free download for iPhone via the App Store.
