According to Reuters, they claim to have heard from their sources familiar with the matter that Apple is planning on introducing subscription-only content through its News app, thus giving publishers a better way of controlling who gets to see their articles. A good example would be The Wall Street Journal.
The publication shares some free articles everyday, but the bulk of its content is behind a paywall so by introducing subscriptions, users using the News app will be able to view more content. Right now magazines and newspaper subscriptions are available via separate apps, so perhaps by consolidating them into the News app and with access to paid content, perhaps more users might be inclined to use the app.
However right now it is unclear how Apple will manage the feature, namely how will they authenticate who subscribed to what, and whether or not they will take a cut from subscriptions since technically the News app is by Apple. In any case take it with a grain of salt for now, but what do you guys think? Will you be interested in subscription-only content via Apple News?
