According to a report from yesterday, it was revealed that Valve managed to ring in the new year in a big way by having the highest concurrent user count on Steam to date, which at that time was sitting around the 12.3 million mark. However Valve might have other reasons to celebrate as well.
Based on the numbers by Steam Spy, it has been suggested that in 2015, Valve’s Steam platform actually managed to sell a whopping $3.5 billion worth of games in the entire year! Note that this is only for games sold, and it is not taking into account revenue made from in-game purchases or DLCs.
This is good news for both Valve and the developers. Valve obviously takes a cut from game sales, and developers now have more reason to turn to Steam to sell their games as $3.5 billion is nothing to sneeze at, and goes to show how effective the Steam platform is as a storefront and as a games distribution platform.
The numbers also revealed that last month was the platform’s most successful month as it named $436,138,345 in sales. This shouldn’t come as a surprise given it was the holiday season, and let’s not forget the Winter Sale had kicked off then as well.
