Suspected Man Behind VTech Toy Hack Arrested

It was sometime last month that we brought you word on how a hacker successfully compromised the security of toymaker VTech’s servers, gaining access to the personal information of millions of VTech toy owners – that would mean children and adults alike. So far, there does not seem to be any serious ramifications from the hack, but police have managed to snag a suspect. The arrested 21-year-old man from the UK was taken into custody based on suspicion of crimes related to the VTech hack.

Officials overseeing the matter said, “We are still at the early stages of the investigation and there is still much work to be done.” Needless to say, this hack raised the alarm bells for consumers, mainly parents as the hack targeted children’s learning and messaging toys, not to mention gaining access to information such as photos and chat logs.

At this point in time, VTech is working alongside the U.S. cyber security firm in order to further investigate the hacking incident, and there has been no report on the progress to date. U.S. consumers have also filed a class action suit against VTech, citing alleged privacy violations which are connected to products such as the InnoTab 3, InnoTab 3S Plus, InnoTab 3S, the Tote & Go Laptop, MobiGo, ABC Learning Classroom toys; in addition to the Kid Connect, Learning Lodge, and PlanetVTech services.
