Before cries of bias are bandied about, do remember that Consumer Reports surveyed 58,000 subscribers who picked up laptops between 2010 and 2015, and the respondents were polled every single year for its failure rates so that there is an overall feel to the brand reliability.
Close to 20% of users reported cited a malfunction of some sort within the maiden 3 years after purchase, and majority of those touted a serious system issue. Apple had a 10% failure rate for its laptops across a similar time period, with the MacBook Air at 7% while the MacBook Pro carried a 9% rate. Annually, the MacBook range has a collective failure rate of 4% tops, and in comparison to Windows machines, Gateway’s NV laptop had a 13% failure rate. Lenovo ThinkPads and Dell’s XPS laptops did not fare any better either, with a failure rate of 15%.
