It has been a while since the courts have ruled that the amount Samsung should pay Apple in damages for their patent infringement. For those unfamiliar, that amount was reduced from a whopping $1.05 billion to $548 million. Granted it’s still a lot of money, but no doubt it is a lot more manageable than a billion dollars.
It looks like we’re close to putting the whole patent war behind us because Samsung has finally agreed to pay Apple the $548 million owed. However it seems that Samsung’s payment to Apple comes with some strings attached. For example Samsung is setting conditions that they deserve to be reimbursed should the judgement in the case be modified, reversed, vacated, or changed to favor Samsung.
Unsurprisingly it seems that Apple isn’t too amused by Samsung’s conditions and are disputing Samsung’s claim to reimbursement rights. This case between Apple and Samsung has been going on for about 5 years now, with both companies going back and forth, winning some and losing some.
Will Apple ultimately accept Samsung’s conditions to put it all behind them? For now it certainly does not look that way, so we guess we’ll have to wait until next year to see how this one plays out, but what say you? Should Apple just accept it and move on?
