Nissan and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration have issued a recall for about 34,000 units of the Nissan Rogue crossover. The recall statement mentions that this is due to a problematic shifter which could let the vehicle shift out of Park even without the brake pedal being depressed as usually required. The issue could make it much easier for the vehicle to be stolen or if it’s left in Park, it could just roll away unexpectedly and potentially cause an accident, which really won’t be good at all.
These 34,000 units which have been recalled were all manufactured in Smyrna, TN, between February 10th and May 13th earlier this year. They are also estimated to be in the hands of private vehicle owners in the United States, some 895 are believed to be on dealer lots right now.
The issue only appears to affect half of the Rogue models that Nissan sold during that period, during that three month period the company sold about 70,000 units, and since the Rogue only comes with one engine and transmission combination, the difference between these units could come down to the front or all wheel drive configuration.
The recall is going to involve dealers that are going to inspect the gear level and then replace the knob if required. This campaign is going to kick off later this month, owners of affected units will be hearing from Nissan in the very near future then, for more information Nissan Rogue owners can contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
