Moving forward, both chipsets will be henceforth known as the Snapdragon 650 and Snapdragon 652 respectively. While we’re not familiar with why Qualcomm chose this naming scheme for its chipsets, it is widely-accepted that the 2, 4, and 6-series of chipsets are typically for low-mid range handsets and the 8-series tend to be found in higher-end and more powerful devices.
So what’s with the renaming? According to Qualcomm, this is because they have recently announced new 6-series of chipsets and because they felt that the 618 and 620 were more significant and had a bigger advantage in its hardware, that they decided to rename them to prevent any confusion.
According to the company, “Because of this, Qualcomm Technologies is making minor adjustments within the product lineup to better reflect the positioning and capabilities of these two processors by renaming the Snapdragon 620 and 618 to the Snapdragon 652 and 650, respectively.” So in the future if you see devices with the Snapdragon 650 or 652, know that they aren’t exactly “new” chipsets, but rather rebranded ones.
