All eyes are on Nintendo to see whether the company’s new console succeeds in capturing the interest of gamers who might then want to go out and actually buy the Nintendo NX. The company has made it a point to mention time and again that the new console will be different from existing hardware which includes the Nintendo Wii and Wii U. Company president Tatsumi Kimishima has once again reiterated the same.
Kimishima reiterated the company’s stance in a new interview with Time, saying that the Nintendo NX is the next step in the company’s dedicated device strategy, which he says remains a “primary focus of our business.”
Despite the fact that it’s gearing up to launch a new console in the future, one that fans have been anxiously waiting for, the president of Nintendo says that for now the company has no plans to discontinue support for the Wii U. He adds that Nintendo will continue to support game development for the Wii U since you can’t force customers to “move on to the next thing.”
Kimishima’s stance really isn’t that different from that of former Nintendo president the late Satoru Iwata, who also went to great lengths to assure both fans and investors that the NX is going to be a completely different product than the Wii and Wii U.
Nintendo hasn’t confirmed a release date yet but rumor has it that the NX might be formally unveiled in June next year.
