One of the reasons why Sony’s RX100 series has been so popular is because for a compact camera, they come with rather big sensors of the 1-inch variety, which are typically not found in compacts. The end result is a camera that can slip into your pocket, but yet yield images whose quality might not be common amongst compacts.
As you might have heard, there was a rumor earlier this week suggesting that Nikon could be coming up with high-end compacts, and now the folks at Nikon Rumors are back with additional details. According to the report, it seems that these compacts will indeed sport a 1-inch sensor similar to what Sony is offering.
The rumors also claim that we can expect at least three different variants with different focal lenses. One of those variants is a wide-angle model with a 18-50mm f/1.8-2.8 lens. The other is a 24-85mm f/1.8-2.8 lens, and last but not least there is a superzoom version with a 24-500mm f/2.8-5.6 lens.
The report goes on to add that there might be hot shot functionality for some of these cameras, along with EVF although there is a chance that the EVFs could be external and sold as optional accessories. Take it with a grain of salt for now, but this would not be a surprising decision. Apart from Sony, Canon has also gone down the 1-inch sensor compact path with the Canon PowerShot G7 X, so why not Nikon too, right?
