If you happen to use the MacKeeper software on your Mac then you might want to pay attention to this. Kromtech, the Germany-based company that has developed his software, has confirmed that login credentials, internet addresses and names of millions of its customers have been leaked online. The company does try to assure customers that at no point was their payment information at any kind of risk.
For those who are unaware MacKeeper is a program that’s widely promoted on the internet as one that cleans and protects computers powered by Mac.
Kromtech said in a statement that it takes the privacy and security of its clients’ information very seriously and that from the moment it was aware of the access it immediately took several “proactive steps” to locate and fix the issue.
Leaked user data was discovered by security researcher Chris Vickery who says that he had discovered 21GB worth of MacKeeper user data “after spending a few bored moments searching for database servers” which were not password protected.
It’s believed that the database had information of as many as 13 million MacKeeper users however the company has not reiterated that number in its statement. Kromtech is of the view that the leaked data was only seen by the security researcher who subsequently alerted it of the leak, for which it extended a special “thank you” to Chris Vickery.
