The report cites the Electronic Times who claims that both LG and Samsung are apparently close to signing a deal with Apple. Unsurprisingly neither LG nor Samsung offered to comment on the report, as we highly doubt that we will be hearing from Apple anytime soon as the Cupertino company tends to keep mum on rumors and speculation.
That being said, it is unclear as to when we can start seeing iPhones with OLED screens. According to an earlier rumor, it was suggested that we might only start seeing such phones in 2018 which is admittedly a rather long-time away, and that for the time-being Apple is expected to continue using LCDs for their iPhones.
Right now the only Apple device that uses OLED would be the Apple Watch. One of the advantages to OLED is that it offers better picture quality, at least compared to LCD, and that it is thinner thus allowing Apple to create even thinner devices. We suppose picture quality would be subjective as some might prefer the more “natural” colors of LCD, versus Samsung’s displays which some have argued are oversaturated.
