It was first reported about two months back that Metal Gear Solid Hideo Kojima had finally parted ways with Konami. Earlier this year it came to light multiple times that the rifts between Kojima and Konami had deepend and that they ultimately led to his departure from the Tokyo-based games company. There’s hasn’t been official word from the man himself and his disappearance from the spotlight only gets more bizarre as a Konami PR head picks up an award for Metal Gear Solid 5.
Yesterday Sony’s annual PlayStation Awards ceremony took place in Tokyo, some of the biggest developers of the industry were present, like Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii who stood and watched when instead of Hideo Kojima the head of Konami PR went up on stage to receive the awards for Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain.
According to reports out of Japan the title won two awards: The User’s Choice Award and the Platinum Prize. Both were received by the Konami PR head. It’s not like Kojima has never attended the awards ceremony before, he has actually been a regular to this annual affair, and yet this time around he was nowhere to be seen.
In October a spokesperson for Konami said that Kojima hadn’t left the company, instead he and the team working on MGS5 had decided to take “a long time off from work,” and since then the company hasn’t budged from its stance that the man is on an extended vacation.
On the other hand Kojima has maintained complete radio silence which just makes it all so bizarre, but it’s expected that we might hear something from the man himself later this month as his non-compete with Konami is set to expire in December.
