For the average computer user looking to build their own PC, using the default cooler that comes bundled with your CPU is usually good enough. However for the enthusiast builder or gamer, this is a different story as you know for sure that the bundled cooler that comes with your CPU will not cut it, especially if you plan on running intensive applications and processes.
However if you’re looking to build a new PC using Intel’s Skylake CPUs, you might want to take this into consideration. According to a report from German tech website Games Hardware (via ArsTechnica), it has been discovered that Intel’s Skylake CPUs are apparently bending and in some cases breaking, when used with third-party cooling systems.
This is apparently due to the substrate used to build the Skylake chipset, which has been found to be thinner than previous-generation chips. This is by no means Intel’s fault, but given that cooling systems were designed to be used with thicker CPUs, this has led to some users experiencing bending or breaking.
This isn’t exactly a widespread issue as there are many PC vendors out there who have yet to report that they are experiencing this problem. However if you do have a Skylake PC, perhaps this is something you might want to take a look at and maybe consider investing in a Skylake-compatible cooler.
