64-bit Firefox For Windows Now Available

Ever since Microsoft introduced 64-bit Windows, various softwares have been updated to include 64-bit versions as well, or at the very least users are being offered either 32-bit or 64-bit versions of the software. Interestingly enough Mozilla’s Firefox has remained 32-bit for the longest time ever, but not anymore.

The folks at Mozilla have recently announced that the 64-bit version of its Firefox browser for the Windows operating system is now available for download. According to Mozilla, “Today we are releasing Firefox 64-bit for Windows to offer gains in performance for users with 64-bit systems. We’re pleased to offer it to users of Windows 7 and above looking for added performance for applications and games.”

However Mozilla notes that the 64-bit version of Firefox will have limited support for plugins and this is by design. This means that some sites that require plugins that worked in the 32-bit version of Firefox will not work or display properly, so that’s something to take note of if you are planning to use the 64-bit version of the browser.

With the upgrade to 64-bit for Windows, it looks like Apple’s OS X platform is the only platform left that does not have a 64-bit version of Firefox.
