Elon Musk Forms Nonprofit To Keep AI Beneficial

elon-musk-newThe concept of artificial intelligence (AI) is an amazing one. Right now computers only do what they are told, but for a computer to eventually be able to react and think on their own? That would make our lives so much easier. However at the same time after seeing movies like Terminator, it is understandable why some are wary about AI and its potential pitfalls.

In fact recently Tesla’s CEO Elon Musk announced that together with a group of partners, they are launching a nonprofit venture called OpenAI. This project will be co-chaired by Y Combinator CEO Sam Altman along with other tech companies and groups from Silicon Valley such as Peter Thiel, Jessica Livingston, and Amazon Web Services.

According to the statement made by OpenAI, “Because of AI’s surprising history, it’s hard to predict when human-level AI might come within reach,” it reads. “When it does, it’ll be important to have a leading research institution which can prioritize a good outcome for all over its own self-interest.”

Musk has in the past spoken up about the possible dangers of AI and how he’d like to avoid a Terminator-like future. To that end Musk had previously donated money to help keep AI beneficial, but OpenAI is basically Musk taking things into his own hands. Musk is not alone in his fears as renowned physicist Stephen Hawking had expressed similar concerns as well.
