DirecTV’s vice president Phil Goswitz shared, “Forty percent of people are going to have UHD TVs coming out of Christmas and they are going to be looking for something to watch. Our goal is to have them tuned to DirecTV and have as much linear live content, especially sports content, as soon as possible.”
Live programming of 4K channels on TVs are more challenging to roll out than 4K streaming, since 4K set-top boxes are touted to be the “first wave”, before TV networks begin to produce 4K telecasts of their own, and this is the direction in which DirecTV is headed. Right now, DirecTV boasts of a capacity for 50 UltraHD channels, in addition to their current HD and SD offerings.
