Chromecast Audio Can Now Stream Hi-Res Audio

The Google Chromecast dongle can stream music, but given that it connects to a HDMI port, it use seems to be largely limited to the TV. This is why we can only imagine that music lovers were thrilled when back in September, Google announced Chromecast Audio which is basically shares similar functionality as the Chromecast, except that it is for audio.

That being said if you’re a bit of an audiophile and you want your audio to be as top-notch as possible, Google has announced an update to the Chromecast Audio in which they will be adding support for hi-res audio. According to Google, the update will include support for 96KHz/24bit lossless audio playback, a notch higher than CD quality.

Google writes on its Chrome blog, “Today we’re rolling out high-resolution audio support, which gives you even higher quality music playback using Chromecast Audio. With support of up to 96KHz/24bit lossless audio playback, you can enjoy higher-than-CD-quality audio on your existing high fidelity audio equipment.”

Of course for most audiophiles, the idea of streaming music wirelessly is a big no-no due to belief that the transfer over wireless networks will degrade its quality, but if you’re not too fussed or if you can’t actually perceive the differences, then perhaps this update is for you.
